LaCie has announced one of the lowest priced DVD-R drives, breaking the sub $700 barrier. The storage solution company announced the new drive that supports both DVD-R and DVD-RAM. DVD-RAM disks can not play in a normal, set-top box DVD player however DVD-R disks can.
The drive connects to your computer using FireWire, which allows for high speed transfers of up to 22.16 Mbps for DVD-RAM and half that for DVD-R. The drive will allow home and professional video makers to burn their own DVD's and play them DVD players. DVD-R disks cost around $12 and they hold on one side 4.7GB. LaCie sells a DVD-RAM 4.7GB disk for $25 and a double sided disk that hold 9.4GB for $45. Expect the product in stores now.
