Through an anonymous source, Camcorderinfo.com has received more information about Sony's plans at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the largest show surrounding camcorders every year. Typically, every manufacturer announces new camcorders at CES.
The last few years, Sony has announced their changes to the Digital8 line at CES. With Digital8 camcorders becoming better and better, and thus becoming stronger and stronger competition for Sony's MiniDV camcorders, we've been predicting a major change in the Digital8 line. We didn't know if it would mean an upgrade or what. According to our anonymous source however, Sony is going to be moving away from Digital8 camcorders and concentrating more on MiniDV camcorders at CES.
We don't think that this means Sony is completely ending Digital8 camcorders (we don't know for sure), just that they are going to be putting more emphasis on the MiniDV line. How this change will be carried out is unknown. Whether or not it means that they are just adding more MiniDV units, while either maintaining or slightly upgrading the Digital8s or if it means that they are going to be producing less Digital8s is unknown. How MicroMV camcorders factor into the whole situation is also unknown.
