JVC has announced new camcorders at the Consumer Electronics Show. The new models are the GR-DVM96U and the GR-DVM76U. Both are matchbox (vertical camcorders) that are designed for people who need small, portable camcorders.

Both are MiniDV camcorders with still photo capabilties. JVC didn't provide many details about the camcorders in their press release, but here is what we know about the top model, the GR-DVM96U. JVC says the top model is ''optimized for the internet''. It includes the capability to record MPEG-4 video for transfer over the web. Although we don't know how good the compression is, MPEG-4 is considered superior compression to MPEG-2 which Sony uses. The camcorder also includes many software packages to help with video editing and still picture editing.

The GR-DVM96U also includes a MegaPixel CCD for high resolution stills. The GR-DVM96U will be availble in May for $1299.95 and the GR-DVM76U will also be available in May for $1099.95
