Pretec Electronics, a relatively unknown manufacturer of digital cameras and storage devices, has announced the DV-4200, a tapeless MPEG-4 camcorder at the Photo Marketing Association annual show in Las Vegas. The camcorder records the video to flash memory cards and can also store 2 Mega Pixel stills.

In their press release, the company said ''Weighing less than one pound with dimensions of 4.5x3x2 inches, DV-4200 is smaller than most DV camcorders today. Compared with other MPEG-4 digital camcorders on the market today, with 10-15fps (200lux low light sensitivity), VGA still image picture and mono AAC audio, DV-4200 is much superior and practical for every office or family use, offering 30fps (30lux low light sensitivity), 2.1MP still image picture, and AAC audio. ''

The DV-4200 should be available in the second quarter of 2003, for an estimated retail price of $499. Pretec is a new entry into the camcorder market, and if this camcorder performs it could provide some competition for the big five manufacturers.
